Generally, gardens are the greatest attractions in any landscape. Gardens are maintained in residential as well as in non residential areas like parks, theme parks, amusement parks, and restaurants. Both residential and non residential gardens need good designing to make them look attractive.

Most garden owners wish to design their gardens using expert garden designers. A garden designer must have hands-on experience in gardening. A trained garden designer should have a sound knowledge in horticulture and architecture. Many institutions, colleges, and universities offer courses on garden designing.

The landform, water features, water fountains, garden pools, garden planting, garden buildings, garden lighting, garden statues, garden ornaments, garden furniture, and landscape materials are some of the elements of garden designing. These elements will play a big role in making the garden look fabulous. The important aspect of making a sophisticated garden is the knowledge of how to go about combining these designing elements.

Trying to include all the designing elements won?t be nice for good designing. Have a theme with your garden designing and include only related designing elements in your garden.

The element landscape is the geomorphologic unit. It is classified according to its characteristics like orientation, slope, rock exposure, soil type, and other things. The water feature elements like ponds, pools, fountains, cascades, and splashes are included in the design to make the garden look lively.

Replenishing and pruning the plants to desired sizes and shapes is the latest trend in gardening. By using various plants, you can design the gardens with themes. You can include some miniature models of famous monuments or buildings in your garden?s pavilion to make it look unique.

Fire light and oil light are common garden lighting elements used to illuminate your garden. Garden statues will add a streak of life to your garden. Some of the statues may come with fountains in them.

Design your garden by trained garden designers with sophisticated designing elements to add that touch of elegance and give your garden a sense of uniqueness.

Each Japanese garden is unique in its design, and most Japanese gardens are designed in a very singular way, but using common elements that are traditional in Japanese design. The most common elements that are considered for Japanese garden design are rock, water, plants and ornaments. In Japanese garden design, each of these serves a specific purpose.

Rock is considered the foundation of the garden. In Japanese garden design, great care is taken in laying out the stones and the rest of the garden will follow this form. Tall, vertical stones may be used, or long stones may be laid on their sides, arching stone pillars and reclining rocks are all used to contribute to the design. Then stepping stones and rock pathways are formed. Since these rocks have meaning in traditional Japanese garden design, the placement of each stone and rock is crucial. But we may just place them where they look best.

Water is another critical element of the design of the garden. It may really be water, such as a pond or a waterfall, or it may just be suggestive of water, such as stones raked in such a way as to resembel a stream. If you use real water running the water over surfaces such as stone, will add a peaceful sound, and create serenity. The Japanese view water as symbolic of time passing, so it is an important feature of a contemplative garden.

The actual plants in a Japanese garden are secondary to the importance of stone in the garden. But they are crucial to the design and must complement it. They must harmonize with the stone and their placement must be well thought out to do so. Bamboo and Japanese maples are often used, but the kind of plant you use is not as critical as the harmonious placement. Some easy to use and place plants are ornamental grasses, evergreens and many deciduous trees.

The next element is ornamentation. Ornaments are not focal points, but merely serve to enhance the critical elements of the garden such as rock and water. Therefore, they are strategically placed to accent a bridge, a stream or a stone in the garden. You will find lanterns, shallow basins or small sculptures in the garden. A Japanese garden will be situated as to take advantage of surrounding features. For instance, an opening in a gate may frame a distant tree or mountain, or a stone stream may be placed to appear as if it is meandering off into a faraway shore.

One difference concerning garden design with perennials from other kinds of flowers is that perennials take a year to really fill in. If you are looking for instant gratification, you might want to simultaneously have an additional non-perennial garden to satisfy your immediate needs.

Even in the second year of garden design with perennials, your garden will not look the least bit impressive. Again, if you start second garden at the same time, you’ll have something to bring you some gardening joy while you are waiting for your perennials to mature.

Most people who haven’t dabbled in garden design with perennials are literally shocked in year three as the plants burst out in growth and color. At this time, you’ll be thinking about how you can get rid of that instant-gratification garden you had going while you were waiting.

Now, don’t think you can just sit on your behind as your garden is in full bloom. Your plants will start to take on minds of their own, some maturing even more, while others wither away and die. One of the many advantages of garden design with perennials is that the plants are easy to move. You will find in year three that the garden doesn’t look quite like you though it would and you’ll want to make some rearrangements and changes.

Something to consider while garden design with perennials is growing extra plants in a separate area. Since the wait time for a mature-looking garden is two years, any additions you make will take two years to catch up with the rest. Plant perennials in several places, even in areas you hadn’t considered. This way, after all the gardens mature, you can move plants around to get the design you want.

The Importance of Planning Your Garden Design With Perennials

Those not experienced in garden design with perennials will also want to talk with an hold hand. The challenge with this variety is anticipating what it is going to look like in two years. Depending on the plants you choose, you are going to want to pay attention to factors like spacing. Your plants will look quite sparse for the first two years, and then all of a sudden they’ll looked crammed together. In addition to talking with an expert, you may want to check out some garden design software to see if that can help you (see link above).

Garden design with perennials can be fun and rewarding as long as you know that you are going to have to wait for the payoff. In addition to you garden design with perennials, you might want to plant a garden with varieties that will payoff immediately to keep you interested. And finally, plant perennials than you will need so that you can add in or take out flowers until you get the garden you want.

Designing a garden seems to be easy. However, when the garden is finished, some gardeners become disappointed with the result. The final product is messy and not appealing to the eye.

That is why it is important to study the basic elements of garden landscaping design and apply them during the making of the garden. By familiarizing the five elements of landscape design, a gardener can put up a garden that is both visually appealing and organized.

The first element of garden landscaping design is form. Form is defined as the shape of something. A tree for example, may have a form involving upright branches like pines. Or it may have a droopy form like that of a mulberry tree. The position of plants with careful consideration on their form gives the garden a unified feel.

The second element of garden landscaping design is line. Line refers to the fact that a person’s eye movement is unconsciously guided by the garden’s borders, the arrangement and outline of plants and other structures. This is quite useful when the gardener wants to emphasize a certain point in his garden. The line of plants can subtly guide the eye movement to that area.

The third element of garden landscaping design is texture. Texture refers to how the surface of the plant is distinguished and seen, relative to the plants and other objects around it. The viewer usually perceives the texture of the plants by judging the size and shape of its leaves.

The fourth element is proportion. It is the requirement that the size of the plants and structures in the garden should fit into the whole landscape harmoniously. An out of proportion garden disrupts the landscape since the height and size of the plants and objects do not offer a good transition. Good transition refers to the gradual change in size or height of the object.

The final element of garden landscaping design is color theory. Color theory is the relationship of one color to the other. Expert gardeners use color theory to provide unity or contrast in their gardens.

Color theory can also set the atmosphere of the garden. For example, using flowers with warm colors such as red and yellow excites the viewer and gives off a feeling of liveliness. On the other hand, using flowers with cool colors such as blue or green, invokes a feeling of relaxation and serenity.

Armed with this understanding, the gardener can now incorporate these elements to make a unified and beautiful garden of his dreams.

A common mistake when planning a garden is not deciding on your garden’s design before you begin planting. If you take into consideration all aspects of what you would like to see in your garden, then chances are the end result is going to be beautiful.

If you are just starting out, it might be a good idea to talk to a professional gardener to get advice on how best to lay out your garden. Many gardeners are willing to do a consult with you and some will even do it for free. You will need to determine the location of your garden first, so that you will know the amount of light that your garden will receive. Plants, flowers and vegetables vary greatly in the amount of light that is required for them to succeed. If your garden is going to be in the shade, make sure that items you include in your garden are able to grow under these conditions.

Perhaps the most important thing to do when you begin your garden design is to fence your garden in.

Fencing your garden has several advantages. First, it helps to protect your garden from critters who are apt to destroy or damage it. It also helps to set firm boundries for the garden and help you establish where you want to plant. But besides the practical, fenced in gardens can look especially beautiful.

You have several options when creating a garden fence. You can make it out of wood or dry stones. The best choice is probably vinyl fencing. A vinyl fence looks very attractive, but it also is easy to maintain and can withstand the elements as well as any animals that might try to damage your fence or garden. Vinyl fencing can be purchased in ready made form to save you time and energy.

Once you have selected your fence, map out where you are going to plant each item. Make sure you give plenty of room for each plant and consider what will happen if one of your plants is an overachiever. You don’t want your garden to suffer because you packed it too full.

Consider adding some interesting design elements to your garden. One choice is evergreens. Evergreens work well in a garden because they smell great, have cones and berries and are very versatile. Another option to consider is pansies. Pansies are tough flowers and they can bloom even when it snows! If you carefully design your garden you will have year round beauty.

The best tip for garden design is simply to design it. Many gardeners will overlook this crucial first step. If you take the time to plan out your garden, both in terms of design and when is the ideal time to plant, you will be the envy of your neighborhood soon.

How do you create flower garden ideas? Let me count the ways.

Take garden tours. There is no substitute for actually seeing gardens in the flesh. I routinely take one or two tours every spring and summer just to see what I don’t like.

Read magazines. These dead-tree monthlies are full of pictures of great gardens. How else do you think they market their products ? I go to a bookstore and browse the racks. No, I don’t subscribe to any because (quite frankly) I get most of my raw information from the Net. But I do get some interesting design ideas from magazines.

Check out books. If you flip through pages of garden design books, (while you’re in the bookstore) you’re going to see tons of examples of great gardens. In fact, many of these gardens are unreal they are so perfect but you’ll get great ideas.

Let me quickly tell you that pictures in magazines and books are often “staged”. I mean that the magazines hire professional photographers and crews to “improve” the look of the garden. Extra flowers are brought in and tucked in to make the garden appear fuller. A bit of garden whimsy is added here – a potted plant is tucked there and suddenly.. what was a good garden becomes just a little more special in the eyes of the camera. For the next shot, flowers are moved, statuary adjusted and once again, the look of the garden changes. And you get a great looking garden magazine picture.

The internet is a tough place to find pictures of great looking gardens. I tend to write about individual plants (the how-to of plants) but am moving towards design items (I wrote a paper book on Perennial Garden Design) and incorporating more real pictures in my website. One of the practical problems of course is that most of our garden photography is on slides and it takes a lot of work to transfer these to digital images. But this is about getting you good flower garden ideas not about the problems of garden writers.

Sign up for my newsletter. You’ll find I routinely talk about design or about parts of design in abstract terms. I can’t solve your design problems but I do try to give ideas. Also sign up for my blog at http://doug-greens-gardening.blogspot.com/, you’ll find I talk more about garden design over there as I run into elements of light and space in my own gardens.

Feeling too much stress? Do you need a place to unwind and gather your thoughts? This is one of the absolute best garden design ideas and it has the power to change your life.

Meditation Garden:

It does not matter where you live or how big your yard is. You can still reap all of the great benefits of a meditation garden. There are a variety of different meditation garden design ideas that you can use to bring peace to your day.

Here is a great design idea for a small back yard that will work anywhere. Of course the reason for having a meditation garden in the first place is to give yourself a place to sit down and meditate, or at least to think quietly and enjoy the surrounding environment. Everything that goes into your meditation garden should be connected to those ideas.

The first thing you want to think about is a nice sitting chair, bench, or swing. Maybe get in touch with your inner child by hanging a swing from an outstretched tree limb. You can also get a beautifully designed bench. Just go with whatever makes you feel best.

You can use your own personal garden design ideas to choose what you want. The next thing you want for your meditation garden is a water feature. This is great for relaxation, and it will attract peaceful little critters and flying friends to share in the beauty of your garden.

Consider a small pond or maybe even a fountain or bird bath. Another fun thing to add to your mediation garden is a Koi Pond. Any of these would be a great addition to your meditation garden. Place your water feature in an area where you can see it from your ’sitting’ area.

Then, you will want to surround the water feature with smaller, beautiful plants of your choice. To add even more to your meditation garden, consider adding some stepping stones from your sitting area leading to your water element. That makes it much easier to walk around barefoot.

You can then use taller plants and flowers behind the smaller ones. Use your imagination and creativity when it comes to your garden design ideas. You will love having your very own place that is peaceful, beautiful and calm.
